Technical Guide
Construction site surveillance explained - from alarm triggers to audio challenge and police response.
Motion Detection
The CCTV tower's analytics detect movement within the camera's field of view. Intelligent analytics filter out false alarms from animals, weather, and vegetation movement, ensuring only genuine alerts are escalated.
Alert to ARC
A verified alarm is transmitted in real-time to the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) via 4G. The operator receives a live video feed of the triggered camera within seconds.
Operator Assessment
A trained operator assesses the live footage to determine whether the alert represents a genuine security threat. This typically takes 15-30 seconds.
Audio Challenge
If the threat is confirmed, the operator activates the tower's speaker system and issues an audio challenge: "You are being recorded. This is a secure site. Police have been called." This deters the majority of opportunistic intruders.
Police / Keyholder Alert
Simultaneously, the operator contacts the police (or a keyholder) with the live footage as evidence. Police response is typically faster when live CCTV evidence is available.
Evidence Preservation
All footage is recorded and stored securely. HD recordings are available to the police and site management as evidence. Footage is typically retained for 30 days.
What is remote CCTV monitoring?
Remote CCTV monitoring involves a team of trained operators watching live camera feeds from an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). When suspicious activity is detected - either by motion detection algorithms or by the operator - they can intervene via audio challenge, alert the police, or contact the site manager.
What is an audio challenge?
An audio challenge is when a remote monitoring operator speaks directly to an intruder via a speaker on the CCTV tower. The operator can warn the intruder that they are being recorded and that police have been called. Audio challenges are highly effective at deterring opportunistic intruders.
How quickly do monitoring operators respond to alerts?
Response times vary by provider, but most ARC operators aim to respond to alarm-triggered events within 30-60 seconds. ICU Security works with NSI and SSAIB approved monitoring centres that meet BS 5979 standards for response times.
Do CCTV towers need mains power for remote monitoring?
No. ICU Security deploys solar-powered CCTV towers that transmit live video via 4G to the monitoring centre. No mains power or fixed internet connection is required, making them ideal for remote construction sites.
Is remote monitoring cheaper than having a security guard on site?
Yes, in most cases. Remote monitoring of a CCTV tower typically costs a fraction of the equivalent manned guarding cost, particularly for out-of-hours coverage. A monitored CCTV tower can cover a much larger area than a single guard and provides continuous coverage without shift gaps.
